On these pages you will find some of the differences between the first
production and early Sprites and the changes that were made on the later cars.
Here's a photo of Pat and
Bob's early Bugeye AN5.
wheel arches taken from
the inside of the cockpit.
As you can see the there
are two gussets
(brackets).  The early cars
were sent out with only
one  It was found that this
was a weak point of
strength and the cars
were recalled to add an
additional gusset which
was bolted to the wheel
well.  This design is on
perhaps only a handful of
the very earliest sprite out
of production.
On this early Bugeye
AN5 2737 you see the wheel
arch gusset on the interior
of the wheel arches.  This is
the passenger side.  Notice
the original designed top
gusset and the additional
modified gusset (the left
one) which is now welded.
This design was changed
sometime in
September-October of 1958.
Here is the final modified
version.  This is from a late
1959 Bugeye.  Here you see
the passenger side wheel
arch which has been
completely boxed.
