Some Basic Structural Differences in the
Austin Healey Sprite Bugeye/Frogeye
The photo below, courtesy  of  Pat and Bob Kessler of LaCrosse,
Wisconsin was taken from their pre-production Austin Healey Sprite.  The
gussets are bolted to the wheel arch.  This was the way the
pre-production, test Sprites were designed.  When the test results were in,
it was determined that this area was a weak point and the decision was
made to weld the gussets to the arch.  The only other Sprite known to still
exist with this construction is PBL-75

In this photo taken from an  early 1958 Sprite,  you
see the gussets welded to the wheel arch.  After
October of 1958, the wheel arches were as they
say "boxed".
